Overcoming Addiction: A Twelve-Step Companion Guide answers the often-asked question, “How do I work the Church’s twelve steps?” With exercises, meditations, scriptural examples, and real-life stories of recovery, “Overcoming Addiction” is designed to be used hand in hand with the addiction manual of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This companion guide helps the addict to more completely experience the power and promises of the twelve steps, and to apply the Savior’s atonement to achieve lasting sobriety.

“Overcoming Addiction” is an essential tool for anyone struggling with addiction, as well as for family members of addicts and for professional counselors and addiction-recovery group leaders.

Editorial Reviews

“In this insightful, empowering manual, Doug Dobberfuhl guides the reader through the complicated and challenging journey of working the Twelve Steps of recovery from addiction. . . . The power behind this guide is that Brother Dobberfuhl has lived what he has written, the most powerful credential of all. The manual is practical, straightforward, and honest. It guides the reader through each step, explaining exactly—with insight and clarity—what is required to ‘work’ the step from a gospel perspective. . . . I highly recommend this to anyone struggling with addiction or living with an addict. This guide can become a personal journey that changes a life.” —Tamera Smith Allred, psychologist and Pulitzer Prize nominee

“’Don’t leave home without it.’ . . . Where the LDS Addiction Recovery Manual is akin to a GPS, this study guide is a guidebook. Use this guidebook and you will more deeply understand the steps of recovery along the way. Questions will be answered and fears assuaged. This journey of recovery is to recover your spiritual and physical life. Shouldn’t you have all the information pertaining to the trip? Shouldn’t you have, at your fingertips, the spiritual insight and understanding that make each step mean so much more? This workbook will do that for you. It did for me.” —Rod G.

This is a great book. Even if you don’t have a “typical” addiction and are unfamiliar with the Twelve Steps, this book will benefit your life. Douglas Dobberfuhl teaches readers how to come unto Christ and accept His healing power. We all need the Savior’s grace, guidance, and healing, no matter what kind of trials we face.

    True Addict
I have spent 35 years of my life as an addict. The LDS church addiction recovery guide is essential, but this book has helped fill in gaps and added more personal insight that was very helpful. Doug spells things out in a very plain and straightforward manner. I have read and re-read this book several times. I’m very grateful for it and Doug’s work in putting this together. The only reason a person wouldn’t get anything out of this book is because they didn’t want to. Just like recovery, you have to put effort in to get results.

    An Essential Companion
I am grateful for Dobberfuhl’s insightful and thoughtful guide in Overcoming Addiction. This is a great resource for sponsors and those working through the 12 steps. While the LDS Addiction Recovery Manual is an great resource, this Guide helps us identify what it truly means to “work” each step. I appreciate the clear and precise language throughout the guide and feel that it helps one delve deeper into better understanding themselves.

  5. Intelligent Reader

The Worst Book on Addiction Ever Written
Dear Potential Buyer, the original LDS companion guide is more than enough. This book is poorly written, has serious publishing flaws in its texts and is not worth the money or the time. In addition, the author is not reputable in his field. Run far, far away from this book! Do not buy!
